Cambridge

The Student Climate Project's first Tour event in Cambridge, from the 15th to 17th of February, was a resounding success. It saw student activists from around the country piecing together their diverse skills to reach out and inspire Cambridge students with the radical climate message.

On the first day the Project held its Day of Active Outreach, which saw a flurry of creative activities take place around Market Square in the city centre. The proceedings kicked off with a bright green banner being dropped from the iconic Great Saint Mary's Church Tower, which remained up for a few hours at the busiest part of the day. Then at 1pm around fifty people arrived for an extreme weather flash mob, bearing umbrellas and running for shelter from imaginary rain. Meanwhile other activists gave out free vegan cakes while chatting to passers by about the issues surrounding climate change. There was much hilarity from street theatre lampooning false methods of tackling climate change, such as offsetting.

The next day The Student Climate Project contributed to a conference titled "Climate Changes: What Next?", organised by the Cambridge Climate Coalition. The conference saw a diverse range of perspectives on climate change presented. The Student Climate Project pioneered their Arts Activist Workshop, a participatory workshop featuring guest performance poets Danny Chivers and John Hoggett. The Workshop was a huge and inspiring success, with many exciting ideas arising. There are plans to repeat the workshop around the UK.

On the final day the Student Climate Project held their next open planning gathering, where newcomers from Cambridge who had been inspired by the project got involved. It is intended that planning for future projects will not be separate from our activities but part of our activities, in order to encourage mass participation in building a wide-spread student anti-climate movement.
